British Values at Millbrook PRIMARY School

At Millbrook we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.  

The Key Values are:

• mutual respect 
• tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs  

British Values are not taught as a separate subject, but are interwoven into our values and our curriculum.  We ensure our children embody British Values and realise that these are an essential quality to have.  These values are reinforced constantly at Millbrook Primary in the following ways:  

Democracy

Pupil voice is of upmost importance at Millbrook Primary School.  Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through decisions made by the Junior Leadership Team who are democratically voted in by their classes.  Regular pupil conferencing of all subjects by subject leaders within the school help us to know the school and learning is viewed by our children.  Democracy starts right from the early years with children able to vote for the story they would like to hear daily.

The rule of law  

The importance of rules and laws are comprehensive throughout the curriculum.  These laws and rules that support class, school or country are reinforced through learning in PHSE (Jigsaw), through regular assemblies and whole school themes.  Our children understand that actions have consequences and it is their responsibility to behave in the right way and to make the right choices. Our ELSA and Home School Link Worker, Pupil Support Lead and SENCO support this work further providing further opportunity to discuss choosing the right path.  We have regular visits from the police and other services to help reinforce these messages.  

Individual Liberty

Pupils at Millbrook learn in a safe, secure and nurturing environment.  They know their boundaries and are encouraged to make choices safely.  They are not afraid to answer questions and will stand up for what they believe in.  Lessons encourage children to work in a group and have their say.  They are happy to agree and disagree with their peers and give reasons why.  Our pupils have the freedom to choose from a number of extra-curricular activities.  Our E-safety and PSHE curriculum allow the children to express themselves and make choices safely.    

Mutual Respect

Our behaviour policy encourages children to respect themselves and others and to work as a team.  The concept is discussed in Build Learning Power (BLP) and RE lessons.  

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

This is promoted through every aspect of school life.  PSHE (BLP) and RE lessons equip children with an understanding of different faiths and beliefs and the values which different religions hold.  Children are taught to respect each other and welcome differences and learn from them.
